Tuamotu Islands Tahiti
The Tuamotu Islands aren’t visited by tourists as often as the larger islands like Tahiti. Island weather is gorgeous all year round and the surrounding lagoons full of gorgeous marine life, making snorkelling, diving and boating very popular pastimes.
Rangiroa is the largest of this particular group of islands. Its lagoon has some of the world’s best snorkelling and scuba diving sites. Fakarava also offers fantastic scuba diving and snorkelling – or as an alternative, you could take in the coral gardens and marine life via a glass-bottomed boat.
The majority of Rangiroa's population live in one of two villages - either Avatoru or Tiputa. Check out a map of the island for more information, however most of the shops and hotels are located in Avatoru. The airport is also located here, with Tiputa just a 45 minute boat ride away.
Manihi is probably the second most visited island in this group – after Rangiroa. It was the site of the first black pearl farm – which you should visit for something a little different. While you’re there, why not buy one of these exquisite black pearls – renowned around the world for their beauty and quality. The village of Turipaoa is also worth a visit – right on the lagoon, it’s a very pretty place.
Tikehau is a gorgeous oval shaped island with pink sand beaches. It is considered one of the most beautiful in this group. It is sometimes said the pure waters contain so much marine life that it outnumbers people one-billion to one!
